A World Upside-Down

This week we have been told, “rape is not rape,” at least not when the perpetrator is a member of the glitterati and the victim is thirteen years old. This week we witness the Empire State Building bathed in RED light to commemorate, or celebrate the communist takeover in China - notwithstanding the 70 or so millions murdered by Mao in the process.

Some might say that we are witnessing moments of insanity, but I would disagree.  We are not witnessing insanity. We are witnessing the products of a witch’s brew that contains an absence of the intuitive values of humanity.  When these values are removed from the collective conscience of those in positions to display what they believe to be the way of the times (also known as “progress”) we witness examples of thought that seem unconscionable to us mere common men. Absence of morality invites immorality.

Many have labeled Adolph Hitler as “insane.” He was not insane.  Hitler followed the edicts of the values that he embraced.  Within that system of values, his actions were brilliant, good, and the epitome of success.  His actions, policies, and their results were completely rational within the world of the values of Hitler’s movement.

America has now endured decades of counsel from “experts” telling us that each person is to determine his or her own values, particularly if they are counter to those of our conscience or counter to the successful, traditional mores of the Hebrews or the Christians. We now reap what has been sown.

Liberalism advertises “freedom.” Liberalism promises freedom from the conscience, freedom from tradition, and freedom from the “myths” of the past. Yet there is no Liberty in liberalism. It can only lead to bondage, suffering, and death for the masses. Liberalism embodies the lie that brings death to the soul. Liberalism teaches that morality is only as man defines it.

Yet as the taste of life in America seems to be hurtling into the darkness, there are indicators of unique encouragement.

On my way home from the office today, I passed a street musician at the entrance to the train station. I had not seen this man before although occasionally others will play and sing there. The others will perform catchy pop or show tunes, sometimes a cappella, but never something spiritual or patriotic.

However, today, this unfamiliar black man was plucking a guitar and genuinely singing “America The Beautiful.” On his tip bucket, in bold, large letters, read “God Bless America.”

Let us ask for God’s Grace upon our nation.

O beautiful for spacious skies,
For amber waves of grain,
For purple mountain majesties
Above the fruited plain!
America! America!
God shed his grace on thee
And crown thy good with brotherhood
From sea to shining sea!

O beautiful for pilgrim feet
Whose stern impassioned stress
A thoroughfare of freedom beat
Across the wilderness!
America! America!
God mend thine every flaw,
Confirm thy soul in self-control,
Thy liberty in law!

O beautiful for heroes proved
In liberating strife.
Who more than self their country loved
And mercy more than life!
America! America!
May God thy gold refine
Till all success be nobleness
And every gain divine!

O beautiful for patriot dream
That sees beyond the years
Thine alabaster cities gleam
Undimmed by human tears!
America! America!
God shed his grace on thee
And crown thy good with brotherhood
From sea to shining sea!

O beautiful for halcyon skies,
For amber waves of grain,
For purple mountain majesties
Above the enameled plain!
America! America!
God shed his grace on thee
Till souls wax fair as earth and air
And music-hearted sea!

O beautiful for pilgrims feet,
Whose stem impassioned stress
A thoroughfare for freedom beat
Across the wilderness!
America! America!
God shed his grace on thee
Till paths be wrought through
wilds of thought
By pilgrim foot and knee!

O beautiful for glory-tale
Of liberating strife
When once and twice,
for man’s avail
Men lavished precious life!
America! America!
God shed his grace on thee
Till selfish gain no longer stain
The banner of the free!

O beautiful for patriot dream
That sees beyond the years
Thine alabaster cities gleam
Undimmed by human tears!
America! America!
God shed his grace on thee
Till nobler men keep once again
Thy whiter jubilee!
